This CPD module discusses fire safety in the dental practice and provides you with an overview of the practice’s responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It also looks at what the Care Quality Commission and the General Dental Council requirements are in relation to fire safety.

Module 1 of the cross-infection control CPD topic focuses on the risks of infection, disease and discusses pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms, immunity as well as vaccinations.

This CPD aims to provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of the infection control lead including the audits and validation of decontamination equipment.

Module 2 of the cross-infection control CPD topic looks at basic steps you can take to keep yourself safe when you are in and around the clinical environment.This includes personal hygiene, personal protective equipment and understanding when hand hygiene routines should be performed.

This CPD module relates to the following GDC outcome:C – Maintenance and development of your knowledge and skills within your field(s) of practice.

Module 4 of the cross-infection control CPD topic looks at specific methods of infection control before, during and after treatment ensuring that HTM01-05 guidelines are being followed. Rather than covering general principles, this module explores time and action specific or sequential procedures, for example the difference between zoning during general and surgical dental treatments.

Module 5 of the cross-infection control CPD topic focuses on the reprocessing of instruments and rendering them safe for use. This includes decontamination processes such as debridement.

Module 6 of the cross-infection control CPD topic focuses on the risks to yourself and others because of the cleaning processes, rather than the danger caused by lack of cleaning.

Module 7 of the cross-infection control CPD topic focuses on staff training and management of decontamination processes. It covers different aspects of management such as understanding the roles of decontamination personnel, health and safety risk assessment procedures and the training needed for staff responsible for implementing cross-infection control measures. This module is aimed at those in charge of leading infection control within their practice and will help to understand aspects covered in module 8 (compliance, auditing and record keeping).

The aim of this module is raise awareness on the legal aspect of infection control and what can happen if proper infection control is not implemented. This unit indicates the need for strict processes and record keeping.
