Tutor bio

Hello, I’m Deana Stone, Course Lead for the Certificate in Dental Radiography at Tempdent. I work closely with our Tutor Assessors to ensure learners meet the required standards of knowledge and understanding throughout their portfolios. My role also includes providing additional guidance to those who need extra support, ensuring every learner feels confident, supported, and prepared to become safe and effective practitioners when taking images under prescription.

I deliver monthly teaching sessions focused on knowledge-based practice and offer one-to-one sessions when needed to provide personalised support. Working as a team, our goal is to help you fully understand the course requirements and reach your highest potential.

This course equips you with everything you need to succeed – and we’ll be with you every step of the way!

Entry Requirements

You must be a General Dental Council-registered professional.

Your dental practice must be willing to allow you to take a variety of radiographs for patients and to supervise you throughout your course.

They can refer the supervision to a suitably qualified registrant, such as an Associate Dentist, Dental Therapist, Dental Hygienist, Dental Nurse, or any medical person who holds a dental radiography qualification.

Curriculum

On completion of the course, you will:

  • Gain knowledge of patient considerations that need to be taken into account
  • Know what equipment is used and how to maintain it
  • Understand the properties of radiation and its effects
  • Have knowledge of risks and maintain operator and patient safety
  • Be able to participate in clinical audits

How long is the course?

This course is 9 months long.

What additional skills does this course give a Dental Nurse?

On completion of the Certificate in Dental Radiography, a Dental Nurse becomes qualified to take radiographs under the prescription of a Dentist.

Is wider practice support required during this course?

Yes. A GDC-registered professional who is qualified in radiography must be available to witness radiographs during your training and provide feedback.

Is there a practical element to this course?

Yes. You will be required to complete a Record of Competence (RoC) or clinical portfolio with radiographs taken in practice, under supervision.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through a combination of: A written online examination, A completed and verified portfolio, Tutor feedback and reflective writing.

Do I need to find my own supervisor/mentor?

Yes. You must have a GDC-registered Dentist or appropriately qualified person in your workplace to act as a supervisor for your practical training.

What happens if I leave my job during the course?

You must inform Tempdent immediately. To complete your practical requirements, you’ll need to arrange a new work placement with appropriate supervision and secure an agreement to continue on the course with your new employer.
